Bamako

The Mwalimu Nyerere Chair in Pan-African Studies will soon host a screening of this film followed by a discussion with Dr. Ikaweba Bunting on captured themes.

Bamako directed by Abderrahmane Sissako is a searing indictment against the IMF and the World Bank. Shot documentary style with real lawyers and witnesses, culminating in a fictitious mock trial of the World Bank. The dialogue is unflinching and witnesses speak of the devastating effects that 20 years of “structural adjustment” has had on Africa. It is a devastating indictment of economic neoliberalism. Witnesses give long speec…hes that connect the viewer to the real lives and to the sociopolitical realities of much of African society. Bamako has potent speeches from African teachers and writers who expose the regressive and destructive nature of privatization, who point to the utter failure of an imported economic strategy, and who tell stories of suffering and struggle caused by or exacerbated by such policy. The film sets a fiery tone of anger, resistance and regeneration.
