Poll #5 asked “What should the overall focus of East African leadership be?” Response choices were “Development”, “Democracy” and “Other”. The poll was open for a week on the Vijana FM homepage sidebar from October 7th to October 14th.
Results indicated 10 responses:
- None responded “Other”
- 20% responded “Democracy”
- 80% responded “Development”
We’ve discussed this choice on Vijana FM before and there are certainly other options we can discuss for the focus of East African leadership. In addition, 10 responses on a virtual platform cannot be generalized for the entire East African population. Even so, given this poll, what aspects of development do you think need focus? Particularly, what is it about the notion of a “democracy” that leaders can afford to ignore for the benefit of economic or social prosperity?
Thank you to all voters supporting these polls!

This week’s poll asks “Where can we learn about and discuss religious diversity?”. Answer choices are “In school”, “At home”, “At religious congregations”, “Anywhere”, “Nowhere” and “Other”. Voting takes place all week on Vijana FM’s homepage sidebar.
I think development without democracy cannot be sustainable because democracy implies good governance ,justice ,free and fair elections among others values ,so if these values lack in a country in long-term the nation will fall in nepotism ,bad economic governance ,corruption which hamper sustainable development.
