Davos 2020: What is New About Jobs of Tomorrow?

Living in today’s world means to stay in the know. Davos is one of the biggest annual platforms for you to get to know about the world’s most pressing issues such as technology, climate and the workplace.

This year’s Davos brought together the world’s top academics, politicians, business and civil society leaders to engage in addressing the most pressing issues on the global agenda. Six key areas were prioritized during the meeting which are; Ecology, Technology, Society, Economy and Geopolitics. Our interest is in the jobs of tomorrow.

Davos —incase you are hearing it for the first time —is a town in Switzerland where the World Economic Forum Annual Meetings take place.

Davos 2020 has reminded us again about the future of work and these are major takeaways.

Robots are coming and they are coming fast.

Tech skills will dominate the jobs of tomorrow

Robots are coming and they are coming fast. As we discussed in our previous article, tech skills are key ingredients in your career. Davos signaled a call on all stakeholders to invest in reskilling and upskilling initiatives so that no one is left behind in the next wave of industry 4.0.

As an individual, now is time for you to spend some extra hours with your eyes fixed on a computer screen either coding, drawing or doing any tech related skills. You don’t need any more reminders that the world is already digital and so should you.

Human skills and ‘who you know’ still matter

Even in the world where people will trust robots, they would still prefer working with a person they know. So keep engaging with your community to grow your network. Also companies are looking for skills that cannot be easily automated. It appears soft skills will always be needed to compliment tech skills. So continue to be creative, adapting, persuasive, be good at negotiation —and every manager would want to work with you.

The rise of the gig economy, remote works and freelancing jobs

The days of working at one company for decades are ending. Today, in a gig economy, temporary, flexible jobs are on point. Companies now prefer  hiring independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees. So don’t worry about not being permanently employed, or work in a physical office (considering the rise of remote jobs) you will still be able to get gigs and make money. However, you have to learn the art of freelancing.

We have been covering insights about Education, Career and the changing nature of the workplace here at Vijana FM in hopes of helping you start visualizing the world in different lenses. You can read all the articles relating to this below.
