Photo exhibition: Watu Wa Tanzania

Rania Nasser, a Form Five student from Dar-es-Salaam, is having a photo exhibition called “Watu Wa Tanzania” at the Alliance Francaise on 7th and 8th of August, 2020.

The use of photography or videos to tell stories is very impactful: It can educate, change narratives and perceptions and bring about positive changes in the world. We have seen so many examples of this. Change starts from changing public perceptions.

Since a very young age, Rania has been travelling to different regions in her native Tanzania. Wherever she has gone, from all the people she has met, and from all the stories she has heard, she has seen the very best of the Tanzanian spirit.

Rania has also traveled to many other countries in the West, but she finds that the warmth and hospitality of the Tanzanian people has been unbeatable.

When travelling to Western countries, she made many friends. One thing she noticed was that they knew very little about Africa and especially Tanzania. She says, “I understand that even people who know that Africa isn’t a country – and that’s not everyone – can’t get past the images of poverty stricken villages, violence-plagued townships, disease and misery”.

Rania has organised this photographic exhibition to highlight the people and beauty of Tanzania. Her passion is to continue to visually document Tanzanian peoples’ stories, and to one day create a documentary on Tanzania that truly does justice to her country and it’s people.
