Whether you are a developer, a business looking to grow your digital presence, or simply a technology enthusiast, you’ve most definitely come across the question “Applications or Websites: Which is better?” or “Which one should I invest in?” Today’s article will discuss exactly that!
Before we proceed, let’s first understand what exactly are websites and mobile applications.
A website is a set of files that can be viewed from a browser like Firefox, Chrome, etc. that you can use to share any information you wish. A website may be linked to a database that can then provide services like like sign ups, blogging, ecommerce, etc. while still working on a browser.
A mobile application is a set of files that are downloaded and installed onto a user’s mobile device and can serve multiple purposes or similar purposes to those of a website. There is some connection to a remote server similar to a website, but some of the functionality can also be based locally on the mobile device.
Now let’s explore some key differences between websites and mobile apps.
Access
You need a browser every time you access a website but you do not need a browser to access a downloaded application. A simple click on your phone is sufficient, but you do need to visit the App Store or Play Store to download and install the mobile app.
Also, apps can be designed to work without an Internet connection. Websites, however, will always require an Internet connection for users to view the latest version.
Updates
With a website, your visitors wouldn’t have to worry about changes to your website since they would appear automatically once they visit the site.
For mobile apps, users will have to download, install, and authorise updates manually for update.
Interaction
With a website, personal interaction with the visitor is limited to time on site. Websites may have the ability to send notifications even when the visitor is not on the website, but that would depend on the customer’s browser settings.
However, with a mobile app, you can set notifications or reminders of your business promotions, giveaways, or anything else you wish! Instant notifications like that tend to be more effective than promotional emails that might end up in their spam or promotions tab. Note that a mobile user can also mute their notifications for apps.
Cost
The basic cost of a website includes domain, hosting, designer/developer fees and support fees. In Tanzania, this can be as low as 25,00 per month for an all-inclusive service.
The basic cost of mobile apps is App Store / Google Play hosting, designer/developer and support fees. These mobile app development fees are usually higher than website development fees. You can learn more about mobile app development costs here.
Time
The time it takes to set up, test and launch is slightly longer for mobile apps compared to websites. That’s because technologies to make website publishing easy are affordable and accessible, while mobile app development still require third party expertise.
Design
Mobile apps are a smaller screen size and require users to swipe and tap, whereas websites have a larger screen size and require users to scroll and click or type. These behaviours require different approaches to design.
A lot of website development these days happens for mobile first, and then larger laptop screens. We certainly focus on this when we develop websites, because we’re aware that in Tanzania an increasing portion of the digital population is using mobile devices.
It’s interesting to note that globally all devices seem to be converging into a portable, touchscreen, long-battery life device, so maybe mobile apps and websites will be designed to be the same thing someday.
Best practices for apps and websites
Since you do not need a browser to access an application that is readily available on your phone, mobile apps are ideal for frequent ad repeated use which would eventually grow customer loyalty. So this makes sense for companies who wish to sell products online such as Kaymu, Kikuu, and Amazon. Having an app will almost definitely ensure clicks and visits to your online platform.
However, if your sole purpose is simply to spread awareness to the general public for a long period then a website might be more cost-effective and a more impactful means of spreading your information when compared to an app. It is also more appropriate for service-based businesses like restaurants, consultancies and group companies.
Should you get a website if you already have a mobile app?
Yes, we recommend getting a website if you already have a mobile app. In fact we would be surprised that you don’t already have a website! Luckily, you can get your website done for you in 3 working days in Tanzania.
Mobile apps are usually secondary to websites and websites are generally what people will start looking for when they hear of a company. Apps are more often promoted on compatible devices after people have visited your website. In some cases, after a website has loaded a pop-up will appear to prompt the visitor to download the mobile app on their device.
Should you get an app if you already have a website?
This is a more common question and depends on your business model. The most important question you need to answer is “Will a mobile app add value to my business?” If you are a store that sells anything physical, having a mobile app to compliment your website in selling your products online will have a positive impact and grow your customer base.
However, if your website is purely informative and rarely has big announcements/events or changes then a mobile app might be a waste of resources. You’re better off investing those resources into promoting your website and making it more user friendly for all devices that access it.
