KwaWote Inc.

By Bihemo K

To begin I will quote two paragraphs from my first post on Vijana FM.

Everyday I read stories about the economic growth of China. I read about Germany’s solutions, clean energy in particular, aimed at solving global challenges. I read about a student in a Tanzanian village who uses an oil lamp with a small floating wick, and that 60% of African population is living without electricity. I read that while two out of five of Africans lack good, and clean water supplies and Africa’s economy is greatly reliant on international aid, African population will double by 2030. Some challenges are old. Some are new.

I ask myself many questions. Some are: For countries to reach or maintain global leadership, should they focus on global solutions because global solutions are always also local while local solutions can not always be global? If the correct answer is yes, then, is it the likeliest situation that an African country will never become a super power?

We are living at a time when all agents of development, across all age-ranges and professions, must work together to solve our challenges. Since life is only a choice that must have a purpose to be lived well; for Tanzania I am proposing KwaWote Inc. KwaWote Inc. will address the many challenges that Tanzania faces, and with each challenge we will initiate its own entreprise: Nishati KwaWote, Elimu KwaWote, Maji KwaWote, Tarakilishi KwaWote, Mkopo KwaWote, Kilimo KwaWote. KwaWote would be a group of these and other similar small social businesses.

Concept Definition and Rationale

Entrepreneurship is the art to risk taking, to venture into something new of any scale from a few US dollars to millions of dollars. The KwaWote idea is founded on the belief that Tanzania will be developed by Tanzanians themselves by their bold search of solutions to their problems from their own perspective.

However, in exercising our minds we must try as much as possible to grapple with issues that are relevant to and from our perspective. For otherwise we will be letting others think for us concerning our problems and the solutions to them.” Benjamin W. Mkapa addressing the University of Dodoma, November 2, 2007.

KwaWote’s flagship entreprise will be the one for providing solar energy – Nishati KwaWote – to needy Tanzanians at a price affordable to them. Nishati KwaWote would work in places where production is possible, in regions close to rivers, lakes or oceans, so that the locals could use the energy, for example, to water their rice, vegetable, or cotton farms. In parallel they would be provided with agricultural specialists so that their farming practices are done more scientifically.

KwaWote would be aware that the level of affordability of it’s technologies would vary among its prospective clients. That is why there would be Mkopo KwaWote, aimed to provide clients with affordable, low interest micro-credit. These loans will be offered at a relatively longer period of time and emphasizing on the sustainable use of the funds, in a systematic way carefully designed to enable client repayment without overwhelming them. Clients will be responsible for what they earn contrary to the conventional philanthrophy and charity.

KwaWote would then move on to provide education for all – Elimu KwaWote. In this initiative clients would be assisted to send their children to any affordable school locally, and any university in the world to obtain the best education available. Again this would go in parallel with Mkopo KwaWote.

Spin-off projects

In parallel, and after maturity of the business, KwaWote will venture into even more ambitious projects, as described below.

KwaWote Inc. will found universities and revamp the old higher education insitutions in Tanzania so that they become more technology oriented and focusing on engineering, informatics, health and applied social sciences. Research labs for both basic and applied research will be started and those in place supported so as to employ graduates from our universities. We will also aim to support undergraduate students by providing them grants for essential research-work during vacations or as part of their thesis. The main goal would be to prepare Tanzania to become a nation of innovators. This would go by the name Utafiti KwaWote.

People need a future, the future needs research. People need health, security, communication, energy and mobility. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft motto.

To ensure that computers are made available to everyone, at a more affordable price, KwaWote Inc. will venture to invent Computer Operating Systems and applications available in Swahili. This would go by the name Teknolojia KwaKiswahili KwaWote. I see this work by starting research labs for the advancement of the Swahili language for computing, the lab among other things will translate the current technology into Swahili so that the majority of Tanzanians who are not fluent in English can participate in the technology boom of the 21st century. If necessary KwaWote will debate with the government to subsidize the costs.

Depending on need and necessity, KwaWote would always expand its reach. Initially KwaWote Inc. will operate in places where production is possible in places such as those that are rich in rainfalls, attractive to touristic activities and mining sites to enable local social entrepreneurs maximize the resources available to them to advance their lives. The focus would be to assist any individual who demonstrates a desire to change their lives. That is why for example Mkopo KwaWote would offer loans to as low as 5 dollars.

I understand that the timely and efficient provision of services is the most challenging in places not covered by national highways. KwaWote Inc. will research on the use of current technologies to overcome this barrier – for example, the widespread use of mobile phones. The use of gyrocopters or helicopters and all-terrain vehicles would be applied to assist in our activities.

As long as one demonstrates a desire to make a difference, KwaWote will be there to offer support and assistance in financing and consultation. In the short run, Nishati KwaWote and Mkopo KwaWote will be the priority. Learning from the successes of these two projects, the incorporation would expand so as to fulfil its more ambitous goals.

  1. Bihemo, good stuff. Two questions…

    1. Where will your initial capital investment come from?

    2. How will you evaluate the progress of your projects so that, after year 1 for example, you know where to spend more money, and where to spend less?

  2. What solar energy platforms out there affordable for wanakijijis do you plan to use? Or is KwaWote going to be involved in the R&D of their own cheap solar energy technology?

  3. @Jack D
I have been working on getting funds so I can start the project. So far I have been thinking about a project similar to this one with a friend of mine. Together we have made some progress, hoping that some funds will come our way. Again, that depends on the availability of funds. I have to learn how to get those funds, but some lessons will definitely be learnt from our current work (if it ever starts), before I can venture into a more ambitious project like KwaWote Inc..

    About your second question:
There will be a series of studies in parallel with testing the idea on different places in the country. An emphasis will be on using technology (in the software engineering industry especially). That way, I believe, an easier evaluation on the success of the
business will be done. I am expecting to graduate with a degree
in electrical engineering and computer science in June 2011 which
I believe will be used to benefit KwaWote Inc.

    @Joji
With solar energy there are some questions of great concern such as production of more energy than required for consumption (storage issue) – Answer to this is: get the energy to be used in farms, sell it to national or store it in a form of heated-water (these are areas already of great interest in today’s research on the solar energy)

And yes, KwaWote Inc. will be the best step towards starting a
large research center for solar energy systems. It is an idea in
    mind too.

  4. Hi BK, good to see more of you here!

I noticed your comments back to @Jack D, and I thought perhaps some of these links might be of use to you: http://vijana.fm/resources/funding-for-organizations/

I know I mentioned Echoing Green to you before, but your civilizational approach to development might be of interest to many other funding agencies.

A note of caution: It is important to figure out whether your organization will be for-profit, or non-profit, or which parts of your organization will be either/or. It sounds like some parts of KwaWote Inc. may be non-profit, while others will be for-profit, and still others will be hybrid. All situations are possible, but when applying for funding, you need to be clear to your investors about where there money is going, and how it will yield returns to you, them, and society.

Most of the links on the Vijana FM resource bank seek out organizations that yield returns to society, either tangibly in the form of income, or intangibly in the form of increased happiness… yes, I said increased happiness 😉 So in short, it doesn’t hurt to make some well-thought out financial plans early on.

All the best, and keep us posted. We’re about to start a “Five questions with…” interview series with entrepreneurial minds, so perhaps we’ll be asking you for an interview once your ideas have produced fruits!

See you around here again soon.

  5. Hey AK, thanks for the nice complements. I will get back to you via email. I will let you know of the current status of KwaWote Inc.

  6. Very good article.

How about Miundombinu(infrastructure) KwaWote ? I think sustainable infrastructure solutions are prerequisite to a sustainable growth. As we shape such projects, we need to keep in mind the whole concept of ‘divide and conquer’. I think the development of a nation is a measurable outcome of the development of small and large societies. Hence I highlight the need to decentralize our solutions and hence the need for infrastructure solutions that link the independent entities. Infrastructure solutions yield mobility, mobility links demand and supply, fosters trade that is driven by the micro-credit loans, invites attractive investments….

For example: Nishati KwaWote needs appropriate infrastructure to link energy production to residential and industrial use. Mkopo Kwa Wote need infrastructure solutions that sustain the trade funded by the micro-credit loans and so forth for the rest of the projects..

    Good initiative!

    Cheers,
    Mussa

  7. @Mussa
You are raising a good point. Actually this is also a problem in Dar es Salaam, that there are, I think less than 3 main roads, into the city center. That’s not good enough for a city with a population close to 4mill. people. Things are even worse in rural areas. However currently in most places there is some form of road (non-tarred though). I have looked into the issue sometime ago, and to this end for Dar es Salaam the use of diesel trams seems to be a very good candidate.

However given the situations that we are in, KwaWote Inc. would focus on the ideas highlighted in the article.

    Thanks for your comment…:) Pamoja

  8. Hey Bihemo,

    Some questions about Elimu KwaWote:

what about those who teach, would Elimu KwaWote provide help to them?

What if they need to improve their French for example? Would Mikopo KwaWote be willing to provide funds for study in french-speaking countries?

Suggestion: Tanzanian students find it hard to speak English. I have come across people who would like to spend some of their summers or a year after college in Africa. Do you think they might be useful in bringing about change? I am talking about volunteers here. Do you think they can be part of Elimu KwaWote?

  9. Hey Thomas, thanks for spending your time to read the article!

For teachers KwaWote Inc. could work with schools to provide them with, for example, Mkopo to meet their such needs as technological via Tarakilishi or TeknolojiaKwaKiswahili KwaWote. One idea would be, for science teachers who wish to start computer studies, KwaWote would assist them by e.g making the study of computer algorithms available in Swahili if needed, or up to date teaching materials in a language they are comfortable with…actually they could be a good candidate to provide them with Nishati to light up schools too (In that case classes would be offered 24/7)

One of the aims of Elimu KwaWote enterprise will be to ensure that its prospective clients can find the best, affordable, education available, anywhere around the global. So the answer here is yes and no.

A long term goal in this area is to found a large center for International Studies and Foreign Languages for the study of foreign languages, international economics, international law, cultural studies, foreign affairs and global issues (I have looked into such a possibility – it’s a promising idea)

See KwaWote Inc. will aim at a social change. Whoever shares the same aim will be a partner. Volunteers will be highly welcomed.

There are many ways KwaWote could be of help. I tried
to cover some of the parts so as to highlight its reach…

  10. Mkopo KwaWote na Nishati KwaWote will go hand in hand. There is a company in Mwanza called Zara Solar: Iangalie hapa [bofya]. They use the same idea as Bihemo has mentioned, on micro-credit loans through banks. So in this case Mkopo KwaWote could work in collaboration with banks.

The idea is working. The only problem now is, they are not yet enough qulified technicians, plus they are a lot of fake solar panels in the market. Thats also an issue. Yah, but thats solvable in my opinion. The idea is feasible.
